In 2018 Pormpuraaw suffered a Category 3 cyclone. As a result, the entire landscape of the community changed. Hundreds of old trees were blown over. Some of the very old trees had a long history and were important to the community. In current times, people would sit and yarn in the shade of the trees. But in the past people considered to be 'trouble makers' were chained to the trees with metal neck, ankle and wrist bands. It is essential that those past times are remembered and acknowledged. |
