Collection: Wood Carvings

Before Europeans arrived, people carved totems from wood using seashells or stone axes. They would perform a corroboree or ceremony around the sculpture and then abandon it. It no longer had any purpose. When the Europeans introduced metal axes and other tools everything changed. Carving became much easier. Pormpuraaw has many skilled carvers.
