Collection: Editioned Prints

The Pormpuraaw art centre is well known for its lino cut and etching practice. Much credit goes Theo Tremblay, master printer based here in Northern Queensland. Printing has proven to be a way of developing stories and designs that can be used in other art forms. Lino cut printing starts with a drawing on a sheet of soft linoleum. The artist carves out the drawing with a chisel. Once completed, a roller is used to place ink on the plate and a piece of paper placed on top and rolled through our press. Etchings involve using sheets of zinc or copper coated with bitumen paint. The design is developed by scratching with an etching tool to remove the bitumen. The plate is put into a bath of nitric acid and water. The acid burns into the exposed metal leaving the painted area protected. This is how a relief is created. Each print is unique and takes high craft to produce.
