'Minha Lo'orrom' is my Kugu word for the Sea Turtle. The sea turtle digs nests and lays eggs on sandy beaches. It is an important totem and in the old days we dug the eggs up for food. In those days we didn’t have boats for hunting them at sea. There are many stories told around this sea creature and the totem is also celebrated in dance. One story tells how the turtle wrestles the lightening and cyclones and keeps them way out at sea to prevent them coming on land where people live. |
