The swamps and wetlands around Pormpuraaw are where we can catch our traditional food and where our ancestors caught their food. Here a mother and daughter are hunting for Swamp Turtles. Called Minh Punchiy in Wik Munkan language or Minha Pungathaa in Kugu language we cook them in a sand oven or on the fire using hot coals. Our ancestors would have cooked and eaten them this way and we continue to do it today, |
