Mud Crabs are an important totem for Kugu people. They call them Minha Lo'orrom. The mangrove swamps and mud around Pormpuraaw are filled with Minha Lo'orrom during the dry season. When the flood water come they wash them out to sea. After the floods stop the Minha Lo'orrom swim back to the rivers. They are very sweet to eat then. The old people hunted them with spears and clubs. The people now use crab pots and spears to hunt them. |
