Jellyfish are a big totem for my Kugu people. My mother told me her story about the mouth of the Holroyd River. This is my Kugu country. There are many tea tree bark trees here. We use their bark from` for many things like bowls for carrying water and food, making floors and roof to our humpies. We wrap food up in the bark making it easier to carry and store. There is one very big old tree that we are not allowed to touch or take bark from. If someone takes bark from this special tree the jellyfish will come into our waters in great numbers. There are so many jellyfish that all the good eating fish go away and we have no fish to catch and eat. If this happens we head inland into freshwater county and wait for the Jellyfish to go away and everything to become normal again.
