This is a story that is passed down generations. Wang Wiik means 'Hairy Man'. He is a spirit man that is used to teach children lessons to keep them safe or scare them so that they will do what they're told, like go to sleep. There are corroborrees and longlines about the Wang Wiik. This sculpture represents the story of two boys in a dilly bag after being captured by Wang Wiik. The story is that the boys went hunting at night for flying fox, which they shouldn't have because it's dangerous, so Wang Wiik stole the boys and tied them to a tree in a dilly bag. An old blind lady was there and asked the boys if they'd been caught that night and they said yes. She cut the dilly bag to release them and they escaped home to their camp. Their families were very glad to see them and the boys told their story about being stolen by the Wang Wiik. |
