Whale Fluke

In this work, Steven Kepper has effectively recycled ghost net to represent part of a whale's tail, called a fluke. The whale uses its flukes in swimming through the water. It is designed to hang on a wall.
Flukes are also used in lobtailing, an activity in which some whales stick their tail out of the water into the air, swing it around, and then slap it on the water's surface. This slapping motion makes a very loud sound and may be a form of communication by the whale. 

By using ghost net creatively, Indigenous artists have helped raise awareness both national and internationally of the devastating environmental impact of the nets in our oceans globally. Most of the ghost nets found on Australian coasts come from Thai, Vietnamese, South Korean and Chinese boats operating illegally in the Arafura Sea and Timorese Sea. The Gulf of Carpentaria is a 'hotspot' because it supports many species of marine life and as such is a fertile fishing ground for small and large scale fishing enterprises.
