| Brolga, Minh Puntil had eight eggs in her nest. Emu, Minh Nampi, with two eggs in her nest. Emu stole all of the brolgas eggs except two and ran away with them. Brolga grabbed her yam stick and began to chase after Emu. They began to fight. Brolga broke Emu's arm with her yam stick. That is why emus can not fly. Emu also had a yam stick and using her good arm she hit brolga over the head, making it bleed. That is why brolga's have a red patch on their heads. Brolga threw Emu into the black ashes of a grass fire. This turned Emu's feathers black. Emu threw Brolga into the white ashes of a log fire and turned Brolga's feathers grey. Finally Brolga agreed to let Emu keep all of her eggs except two. This is why Brolga's now lay only two eggs and Emus lay seven or eight. |
