We call this plant Mayii Umpi'ir in my Kugu Language. It grows in wetlands flooded by the rain during the wet seasons. We eat the stem like celery. The tuber is cooked in hot ashes like a potato. You can eat the tuber raw as well. We know when to harvest it when the pad turns yellow from the water level dropping. The flowers are a beautiful colour and are beautiful to smell. They grow smaller in brackish water and larger in fresh water. We see dragonflies always flying around the wetlands where the water lillies are. |
