Sting Rays are everywhere in Pormpuraaw rivers and beach fronts. The Sea of Carpentaria is a perfect environment for them. It is shallow and muddy filled with crabs and bait fish for them. Our old people would keep the barb from the tail and use it like a needled or on hunting spears. We like to eat the meat from this fish and when the liver makes for a good sauce. The liver needs to be the right colour. Sting rays are an important totem for our people celebrated in song and dance. They protect us from storms and cyclones. |
